Invoking President Barack Obama, House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers (D-MI) has subpoenaed former Bush Deputy Chief of Staff Karl Rove about his alleged involved in the political prosecution of an Alabama governor and the firings of nine US Attorneys.

The subpoena, approved by an earlier vote of the House, was issued pursuant to "authority granted in H.R. 5 (111th Congress), and calls for Mr. Rove to appear at deposition on Monday, February 2, 2009."

Specifically, it enjoins Rove "to testify regarding his role in the Bush Administration’s politicization of the Department of Justice, including the US Attorney firings and the prosecution of former Alabama Governor Don Siegelman."

I wonder how fast Rove is going to get the fuck out of the country as a dodge just like he did last time?
Rove doesn't have Bush to cover his ass anymore and a judge and President Obama have said the prick isn't covered by executive privilege so this ought to be some prime popcorn shoveling times ahead.

"Mr. Rove has previously refused to appear in response to a Judiciary Committee subpoena, claiming that even former presidential advisers cannot be compelled to testify before Congress," Conyers' office wrote in a release. "That 'absolute immunity' position was supported by then-President Bush, but it has been rejected by U.S. District Judge John Bates and President Obama has previously dismissed the claim as 'completely misguided.'"

Attorney General Michael Mukasey on Tuesday rejected the idea of criminally prosecuting former Justice Department employees who improperly used political litmus tests in hiring decisions, saying he had already taken strong internal steps in response to a “painful” episode.

“Where there is enough evidence to charge someone with a crime, we vigorously prosecute,” he said. “But not every wrong, or even every violation of the law, is a crime,” he said. As the inspector general’s report acknowledged, the hiring violations were such a case, because the wrongdoing violated federal civil service law, but not criminal law, he said.

Let me get this straight, you can break a law but not break it.

“That does not mean, as some people have suggested, that those officials who were found by the joint reports to have committed misconduct have suffered no consequences,” Mr. Mukasey said. “Far from it. The officials most directly implicated in the misconduct left the Department to the accompaniment of substantial negative publicity.

“Their misconduct has now been laid bare by the Justice Department for all to see,” he continued. “As a general matter in such cases, where disciplinary referrals are appropriate, they are made. To put it in concrete terms, I doubt that anyone in this room would want to trade places with any of those people.”

The Scruggs Case Fan Club Has A New ClubHouse

She and her band of tenacious law aficionado's are eyeball deep in the Scruggs case, and about a half a dozen related, side cases.
They get out into the really tall weeds interpreting the law and the chesslike ins and outs of these cases.
In case you haven't heard of Dickie Scruggs, he is former Senator Trent Lott's brother in law and he is in a heap-O-trouble.
It's complicated so I am going to link to the Scruggs for Dummies piece that the good folks at Folo created just for people like me who haven't followed it real close.
You are about to see what tries to pass as business and is actually graft and corruption ALLEGEDLY committed by some world class egomaniacs.Bribing judges, scamming insurance claims from Hurricane Katrina, there is all KINDS of hinky going ons here.
There have already been some convictions in this matter so things are starting to get down to brass tacks.
Take a gander at the breakdown and it looks like a soap opera, no wonder some of these folks are hooked, it has some major players in it.
It also has the potential to blast a big hole in some sleazy circles.

In case you weren't aware, there is a very BIG trial going on down South that has some very serious allegations of bribing a judge, scamming insurance claims from Katrina and a whole host of nefarious activity that allegedly runs the spectrum all the way from Dickie Scruggs,Trent Lott's brother in law, to some senior Mississippi office holders, to even Presidential candidates Joe Biden and Fred Thompson.
This is an enormous web to unravel and it is going to be very interesting to see who and what shakes out in the end.
It's pretty complicated but my 'Ol Pal, Lotus, has got the skinny.

Of course you remember a certain skeevy politician named Trent Lott?
Yeah, that guy, his brother in law is eyeball deep in it and it is starting to appear our 'recently retired from Congress to become a lobbyist all of a sudden', Mr. Lott may have some 'esplainin' to do as to the timing and reasons for his sudden departure.

Ones that don't jibe with his version, anyway, are starting to come to light,such as his claiming that his brand spanking new lobbying partnership really hadn't been thought out that much at the time.

The commenter's at FOLO are as much as involved in tracking down legal documents and parsing the legal morass as the proprietor.
It is something else to see.

I only have a rudimentary idea of what is happening but Lotus and crew are busy distilling it down far enough that a rednecked mechanic like myself can follow it.
My hat is off to this bunch, there is a great big story brewing in all this and they know it, they are doing their best to make sure it gets lots of sunshine too.

Abu strikes again.
I an swamped at work for a while and missed most of the lying fuckers testimony.
The old 'I don't recall' meme got another work out though.
That shit makes me wonder just how long Conyers is going to put up with it.
Of course, the ever helpful Republican Senators went wayyy out of their way to help the lying sack of weasel shit. They went off topic at every chance, intellectual property concerns, immigration concerns, Rove set 'em up and they ran with it. What I did catch was nauseating.
And to top it off, Cspan had the hiccups all damn day.
There is some good news though, Murray Wass ( God Bless him) came out with a report that says the DOJ is holding back emails that show Rover was involved and would also show clearly that Abu is lying out his ass.
I am waiting for that bomb to drop.
