You can either have profits, or you can have health care -- but you can't have both. They are mutually exclusive.

As soon as you introduce profits at any point during the interactions between a sick patient and his/her medical provider(s), the care portion goes out the window. It then becomes about money and making more money by any means possible, damn the patient and his/her best interests.

And it's not necessarily because docs and other health providers are "evil," but they have to respond to the market pressures which require them to show continually increasing profits -- or fail and dissolve.

Simply put, profits and health care don't mix.

BTW, if you have a moment, see this. Can you say health care/insurance for profit. At what point did humanity decide that making a profit of someones misery was a humane act. Did I miss that email. For fucks sake. People come on. As for paying for it. It has been stated that if we repeal the bush tax cuts. That by the way didn't effect my taxes in anyway. That paying for this wouldn't be a problem. Hell that's just putting us back to the reagan tax cuts. As for the freedoms lost according to those above. Where the fuck are you getting your information. We may differ, though, as to what those things are. :)

Thanks for the kind words re: my health. I hope your problems are resolving too.

As far as health care, perhaps we can agree (or not) on a compromise (which, btw, will not see the light of day any time soon): let's have Medicare for all who want it, and private insurance for those who don't. If someone is happy paying through their nose in premiums and deductibles for a casino-style health "insurance," which may or may not cover their medical expenses, who am I to argue with that? By all means, have at it.

BTW, we (my husband and I) are self-employed and our monthly insurance premium is close to $1,000 now. Our yearly deductible is close to $10,000. We can no longer afford paying the premiums, but cannot drop the insurance and/or buy a new one because of my preexisting condition (and the possibility of further very expensive treatments in the future). I'll gladly sign on to Medicare and/or any public option available (not a moment too soon).

And, as you well know, we are in a situation similar to that of millions of people in the country.

BTW, I'm originally from Poland. And yes, I was/we were satisfied with our system, though it was not perfect (mainly because of the lack of money to fund the medical infrastructure -- hospitals, etc.)

In fact, several years back we flew back to Poland to do basic health check-ups/tests for our family, which are still incomparably less expensive there.

I'm certain you'll find people who would complain about it -- some for good reasons, others not so much. It's worth keeping in mind who's talking and why (i.e., if this is a physician who immigrated from the socialist/communist country and all of a sudden has a golden opportunity here to become a millionaire, of course they'll put down their past experiences. Granted, Polish doctors -- and I suspect Russian as well -- are grossly underpaid as it is.)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-24855322.post-39535716819830277982009-08-29T14:03:17.588-07:002009-08-29T14:03:17.588-07:00Busted, thank you for this forum.

I have yet to read your link, but I will. And I am interested to know which country that you grew up in, and in which you were satisfied with the *one payer system*.

And Elizabeth, I do not really hate the government, but I do totally lose my mind when the people that run our government violate their oath of office. As a student of government I have learned that the people that run our government are restrained to enumerated powers only. They swear an oath to protect and defend the constitution, so when the VIOLATE its provisions, I consider that an act of treason, and an attack on me personally.

So, to be taxed for programs for which I can find no authority, I get a little ornery. Just not as much as the host here.milton fhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04222904984648426127noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-24855322.post-56888442426657635862009-08-29T10:38:52.722-07:002009-08-29T10:38:52.722-07:00Milton, there is so much wrong with the Maltsev...Milton, there is so much wrong with the Maltsev's article (though, yes, there are good points there as well) that I wouldn't know where to start debunking all the lies and half-truths he managed to insert there.

Like those horrible waiting times in Canada and UK. Take a look at this, for example, to see the real waiting times in the UK for brain surgery after a diagnosed brain tumor. There is, essentially, no waiting at all. Imagine that.

This is an issue close to my heart, because I was diagnosed with a brain tumor this year and had to wait over two weeks (with a potentially deadly tumor that could have killed me any time and with my awesome private insurance, here, in the US) to see a specialist. And I was lucky, because the first specialist I contacted -- and that my insurance would pay for -- offered to see me in a month. (I should also mention perhaps that my brain tumor was, first, missed on the initial MRI, and, second, when our awesome docs noticed it finally -- and even I could see it on the slides, though I'm not a doc -- they misdiagnosed it. But let's just set it aside.)

FYI, I grew up under socialism and experienced this "evil" socialistic health care for the first 23 years of my life, so I can speak from direct experience. There was no rationing, no unreasonable waiting, no service denials, nobody died from treatable and/or preventable diseases, and nobody, ever, went bankrupt (of course) because of exorbitant medical bills. Yes, we were rather poor, so we lacked the medical infrastructure that money can buy -- thus fancy hospitals and state-of-the-art equipment were relatively rare.

On the other hand, here, in the US, we have the money to afford it all, but we misuse it and mismanage it, creating nightmares for American citizens in the process and bankrupting the country, fast.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-24855322.post-16849265280255722922009-08-29T10:15:39.982-07:002009-08-29T10:15:39.982-07:00You are still paying taxes, Milton? I would imagine people who can't stand the government would find a way to both avoid paying taxes and, on principle, stop participating in anything that even smacks of the government.

Don't tell me you are also driving on our public roads...

I don't know what to say, other than it appears hypocritical. But surely you will refuse to be enrolled in Medicare and collect your Social Security payments, no? They are so... socialisticky-ish and evil.

BTW, using Russia as an example of a well-functioning universal health care system is misguided. Russia's health care system is broken and their post-communism "reform" only added to their problems. Take a look at this to see how not to do a health care reform for more info (Russia is not alone in it, as you'll see).

But we are not proposing anything remotely related to the Russian health care system -- and even if we did, it would be impossible to implement it here, because we have a completely different health care structure. If you want examples of how it is done well -- and of what we miss in this country -- look to France, Netherlands, U.K. and Canada.

As of now, we spend more than twice than any of these countries on health care and have much worse outcomes in all health measures.

I also suggest you watch Money-Driven Medicine, which explains well why we are in a deep doo-doo when it comes to health care and why we simply cannot afford to continue this way.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-24855322.post-85663536719293758962009-08-29T09:42:43.985-07:002009-08-29T09:42:43.985-07:00"Did It My Way", I like yer attitude."Did It My Way", I like yer attitude.Philhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15695733883033137146noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-24855322.post-66503829605949933712009-08-29T07:27:44.650-07:002009-08-29T07:27:44.650-07:00I am 68. So is the majority of Americans who file for bankruptcy because of exorbitant medical bills, which they are unable to pay. It is 7 out of 10. Working and insured, not as you put it, to f***** lazy to sign up for welfare (for which they don't qualify, btw). People get sick, sooner or later all and each one of us. Those "classic liberals" who stood against oppression, excessive taxation, excessive government intervention and such. Your arguments are complete bullshit...Mayberryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07664966137470121099noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-24855322.post-14076481867851233942009-08-28T15:41:57.400-07:002009-08-28T15:41:57.400-07:00BTW, my last comment was not directed at you, Bust...BTW, my last comment was not directed at you, Busted, but at all those "brave" anonymous trolls and the government-haters.

But I think you'll enjoy the first link I included there.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-24855322.post-8118696689030150802009-08-28T14:04:57.171-07:002009-08-28T14:04:57.171-07:00Busted, here you have some more numbers to crunch:...Busted, here you have some more numbers to crunch:

Percentage change since 2002 in average premiums paid to large US health-insurance companies: +87%

Percentage change in the profits of the top ten insurance companies: +428%

Chances that an American bankrupted by medical bills has health insurance: 7 in 10

Continue here if you want.

3,000 people die less than every two months because they cannot afford health care. Taxing the wealthy sounds great to poor folks but do you actualy believe that the wealthy wont scramble and hide assets? why do you think congress chose to say they would tax the wealthy? They are mostly very wealthy themselves. Can you honestly name one Government program that does not have excesses and abuses and ridiculous administrative costs? The track record of all administrations and particularly this one is SPEND then TAX. The wealthy will just raise the costs of goods and services thereby increasing your COST OF LIVING. The Medicare and Medicaid programs will continue to have flaws that someone will exploit. Imagine yourself having 3000 thousand dollars of income this year. Are you just going to smile and give up some extra dough to uncle sugar. if you altruisticly give more than your share God Bless You You are a better man than me. I will agressively pursue every avenue of safegaurding my assets for my family guess i am selfish. just like the rich folk who will laugh all the way to the bank as usual.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-24855322.post-36952898328718638942009-08-28T13:21:04.461-07:002009-08-28T13:21:04.461-07:00Busted, that's the best idea I heard all day. ...Busted, that's the best idea I heard all day. Bring the troops home, end the wars, and then work on healthcare.... But that makes too much fuckin' sense, and it's what most of us want, so it'll never happen.Mayberryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07664966137470121099noreply@blogger.com
